This smaller piece is all the bright colours of summer. Yellow hills and red grasses, sunset clouds in the sky and the shifting blue of smoke off the hills.
I painted this while on the phone with my mama, mind half absent, but still full of the blue smoke off the hill from the days before. Might have been burn offs, might have been summer fires, but it didn’t get too far thankfully.
I’m sure every Australian has that fire watch in the back of their mind by this point. Little kids know the word “evacuation” just like they try and swipe to flip the pages in books. Life has gotten weird. And yet, when they don’t bring huge anxiety, the summer fires bring gorgeous yellow skies, and the red grasses that burn so well are also just so beautiful. It’d be nice if we could have the world in balance again, so the natural course of fires and floods could move through the country like they’re supposed to, without being so scaled up that they bring complete disaster and destruction. Still, this piece makes me happy. Maybe it’s a teeny tiny bit of denial but I’m keeping it 🤫
