We have the politest cockatoos, who patiently sit in the branches, looking in our windows and waiting to make eye contact to let us know they would like us to put some seed out. Last night I looked up, as I watered the garden in the dusk, and realised I had my three patient pairs still waiting. The branches were rattling in a hot wind, and there was lightning on one horizon and peach skies in the other, and the young ones were all off in the distance. But my three pairs remained, silent and certain, convinced I wouldn’t go back inside without feeding them.
